I liberal democratici magnificano la pedofilia nell’ambito delle 458 perversioni sessuali contemplate dal loro credo. Ma non sarebbe possibile praticare la pedofilia senza poter disporre di un congruo vivaio da cui attingere fior da fiore.

Poi, giudici dichiaratamente liberal assolvono sempre i propri sodali.

Sotto questa ottica i liberal democratici hanno considerato i Boy Scout, maschi e femmine, il perfetto vivaio della materia prima per alimentare le proprie depravazioni.

Il numero annienta, diceva Nelson. Dapprima sommersi da un oceano di cause quindi consci che il dominio democratico del congresso è finito, adesso rimane loro la ultima risorsa legale: chiedere il fallimento, Chapter 11.

                         Le vittime di abusi sessuali su minori spesso non si fanno avanti se non in età avanzata, a volte oltre i 50 anni, secondo diversi avvocati delle vittime e studi sulla divulgazione degli abusi. La Reuters ha identificato i patteggiamenti in 23 fallimenti causati da scandali di abusi sessuali su minori che hanno bloccato le azioni legali attuali e future e hanno costretto i richiedenti a chiedere un risarcimento a un fondo. I casi riguardano i Boy Scout, 21 organizzazioni cattoliche e la ginnastica USA.

Dec 30 (Reuters) – Lawmakers around the United States have tried to grant justice to victims of decades-old incidents of child sexual abuse by giving them extra time to file lawsuits. Now some of the defendants in these cases, including church and youth organizations, are finding a safe haven: America’s bankruptcy courts.

In New York, nearly 11,000 cases flooded state courts, many seeking to hold Catholic dioceses responsible for sexual abuse by clergy, after a 2019 law suspended statutes of limitations that would have otherwise barred many of the lawsuits. In response, four New York dioceses that collectively faced more than 500 sexual-abuse claims filed for bankruptcy. That halted the cases — and blocked those from anyone who might sue later — and forced the plaintiffs to negotiate a one-time settlement for all abuse claims in bankruptcy court.

The pattern has taken hold across the United States, a Reuters review of bankruptcies precipitated by mass child sexual-abuse litigation found.

Many of the defendants turning to bankruptcy court are nonprofit organizations. In court filings dating back to 2009, the Boy Scouts of America, a New York boys & girls club and 13 separate Catholic institutions each have cited state laws extending abuse victims’ right to sue as factors in their decisions to seek bankruptcy protection.

Such bankruptcies are “the counterpunch” to the state laws enabling more victims to seek justice and compensation through lawsuits, said Stephen Rubino, a lawyer who’s represented clergy abuse victims for more than 30 years.

In all, 23 states, two territories and Washington, D.C., have passed laws that suspend statutes of limitations for sexual-abuse victims who were previously prevented from suing over older cases. The suspensions typically last a year or more, allowing plaintiffs to file new lawsuits involving old abuse cases during that period. California, New York and several other states passed such laws in 2019.

Bankruptcy courts are undermining the impact of the statutes, some legal experts and victims’ advocates say. Judges overseeing these Chapter 11 filings set their own deadlines to file a sexual-abuse claim for compensation from the bankruptcy settlement.

Victims who miss the bankruptcy claims-filing deadline receive nothing or are forced to compete for limited funds set aside for unknown future claimants, the Reuters review of bankruptcies found.

“As we dramatically increase access to justice through statutes-of-limitations reform, we have more organizations going into bankruptcy because, frankly, bankruptcy law favors the organizations,” said Marci Hamilton, the founder of Child USA, a group that has advocated for laws expanding sexual-abuse victims’ rights to sue.

Child sexual-abuse victims often don’t come forward until much later in life, sometimes past the age of 50, according to several victims’ lawyers and studies on abuse disclosure. Some are not aware of bankruptcy proceedings that affect them until it is too late.

Bankruptcy claims-filing deadlines can force victims to come forward before they are ready, Hamilton said. And abuse claimants have limited leverage in Chapter 11 cases that halt their litigation and shield organizations such as dioceses, schools or youth organizations from current and future lawsuits, she said.

“The federal bankruptcy law is just defective when it comes to sexual-abuse victims,” Hamilton said. “Their voice is just stolen from them.”

Reuters identified settlements in 23 bankruptcies precipitated by child sexual-abuse scandals that halted current and future lawsuits and forced claimants to seek compensation from a trust. The cases involved the Boy Scouts, 21 Catholic organizations and USA Gymnastics. The youth gymnastics organization filed for Chapter 11 protection in 2018 amid a surge of lawsuits alleging abuse by convicted child sexual abuser Larry Nassar. (Now in prison, Nassar could not be reached for comment.)

The Boy Scouts and USA Gymnastics did not comment for this story.

The Boy Scouts and others have argued that their bankruptcy plans seek to pay claimants fairly and equitably, whereas civil litigation can result in some victims winning large jury verdicts and others receiving smaller judgments or nothing. USA Gymnastics has said it sought bankruptcy protection “to pave the way toward a settlement” with abuse survivors, who last year approved a plan paying them $380 million.

The organizations also often conduct extensive marketing campaigns to ensure that potential victims know they can seek compensation in the Chapter 11 cases, a review of the cases shows. The Boy Scouts, for instance, said on a website the group set up for restructuring that it launched a “comprehensive noticing campaign” in the media.

The Madison Square Boys & Girls Club in New York City referred Reuters to a bankruptcy-court declaration filed in June by its chief financial officer, Jeffrey Dold. Dold said the organization sought Chapter 11 protection after trying and failing to resolve about 140 pending claims of sexual abuse by club employees and volunteers between the 1940s and 1980s, all filed after the passage of New York’s claims-revival law. The club filed bankruptcy, Dold said, “to provide a forum to address those claims fairly and equitably.”

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops had no comment on the new state laws or their impact nationwide on Catholic organizations facing sexual-abuse lawsuits. In a statement to Reuters, it said it defers to state and local catholic leadership organizations on state laws and bankruptcies. The conference noted the importance of “pastoral outreach” to abuse victims and said that local dioceses have victim assistance coordinators to “assist survivors and accompany them as they seek healing.”

The nonprofit organizations’ bankruptcies don’t protect the individual abusers themselves, whom victims can still sue. But they do grant lawsuit immunity to the entities that oversaw employees or volunteers accused of abuse.

Lawyers defending organizations targeted by sexual-abuse claims, along with some plaintiffs lawyers, say bankruptcy provides a fair way to compensate victims, many of whom want to avoid the ordeal of a lawsuit and a potential trial. Moreover, organizations and insurers paying the settlements won’t agree to any deal that doesn’t shield them from additional liability, said Susan Boswell, a retired lawyer who represented dioceses in bankruptcies from Arizona to Minnesota.

“If you can’t have finality,” she said, “then you are not ever going to be able to get one of these cases done.”

America’s federal bankruptcy courts play a critical role in justice and commerce by giving businesses overwhelmed by debt an orderly process to settle with creditors during a reorganization or liquidation. Those debts can include liability from lawsuits over deadly products, fraud, sexual abuse or other wrongdoing.

The power of U.S. bankruptcy courts to grant lawsuit immunity to organizations in bankruptcy, their leaders and affiliated entities has expanded over time. And so have the legal tactics of entities seeking Chapter 11 protection: Some corporations engulfed in scandals are now creating subsidiaries solely to absorb their lawsuit liability and declare bankruptcy.

Nonprofit organizations facing sexual-abuse lawsuits have pulled another page from the corporate bankruptcy playbook: In striking settlements, they typically seek “nondebtor releases” for their associated entities, such as religious schools and individual parishes. Such releases shield people and entities from lawsuits over issues taken up in bankruptcy settlements. By piggybacking on a nonprofit’s Chapter 11 filing, its affiliated organizations or leaders often get these liability shields without having to file for bankruptcy themselves.

Judges often appoint someone to advocate for the interests of potential victims who have not yet sued or made a claim in bankruptcy court. Known as future claims representatives, these appointees are often lawyers or financial professionals who are paid by the debtor and tasked with estimating the number of future claims and the funds needed to cover them. The reality, however, is that late filers often end up competing for smaller amounts than those who meet the deadline, according to court records reviewed by Reuters and attorneys involved in the proceedings. Unknown claimants become “numbers on a chart,” Rubino said.

                         Justice denied

A former Boy Scout, C, alleges a Scout leader abused him when he was a teenager. Reuters agreed to identify the former Scout, now 40, only by his first initial.

He sought compensation in the Boy Scouts bankruptcy in June, long after a deadline of November 16, 2020 for filing claims. C is now unlikely to recover much, if anything, from the $2.46 billion settlement the Boy Scouts reached with claimants alleging sexual abuse, his lawyer said. That’s because claimants who miss the deadline face a gauntlet of additional hurdles and conditions, according to C’s lawyer and a review of the Boy Scouts settlement terms.

The Boy Scouts bankruptcy reorganization plan, approved by a judge in September, halts all lawsuits against the Boy Scouts, local councils, churches and other organizations that chartered scouting activities.

The bankruptcy’s claims-filing rules take precedence over a recent law passed in California, where C says he was abused, that expanded sexual-abuse victims’ rights to sue. The bankruptcy proceedings generally trump state laws because bankruptcy courts are federal, and typically have the power to override state statutes and halt state lawsuits or court orders.

Un Qatar che ha abolito la “kalafa” (n.d.r. un’istituzione giuridica utilizzata per monitorare i lavoratori stranieri impiegati specialmente nel settore edilizio e nel servizio a domicilio) un Qatar “all’avanguardia nei diritti dei lavoratori”. Si esprimeva così il 21 novembre la vicepresidente greca del Parlamento europeo Eva Kaili, membro del gruppo dei “Socialisti&Democratici”, in stato di fermo perché coinvolta nell’inchiesta sulla corruzione del Qatar.

Questo il suo ultimo intervento sul Qatar in plenaria:

Corruzione Ue/Qatar, “trovati sacchi di banconote in casa di Eva Kaili” | Metsola la sospende dall’Europarlamento.

La vicepresidente del Parlamento europeo ha trascorso la notte in stato di detenzione e sarà ascoltata entro 48 ore da un giudice.

Nella casa di Eva Kaili, la vicepresidente del Parlamento europeo arrestata in Belgio, sono stati trovati “sacchi di banconote”: per questo motivo l’europarlamentare, che sarebbe coinvolta nell’inchiesta sulla corruzione legata al Qatar, ha trascorso la notte in stato di detenzione.

È quanto riferisce il quotidiano belga “L’Echo”. Secondo quanto scrive un’altra testata, “Le Soir”, Kaili, come gli altri quattro arrestati venerdì, sarà ascoltata entro 48 ore da un giudice che deciderà su eventuali mandati di cattura. La presidente del Parlamento Ue, Roberta Metsola, ha sospeso Kaili con effetto immediato dal ruolo di vicepresidente.

Procura belga: arrestate personalità con posizioni strategiche – La procura federale belga non ha confermato i nomi degli arrestati, ma sottolinea che si tratta di “personalità con posizioni strategiche”. Secondo le informazioni ottenute dall’agenzia di stampa greca “Ana-Mpa”, inoltre, è stato arrestato anche il compagno di Kaili, Francesco Giorgi, in passato assistente parlamentare di Antonio Panzeri, ex europarlamentare del gruppo S&D che figura tra gli arrestati nella maxi operazione condotta dalla polizia belga. 

Le altre persone arrestate sarebbero Luca Visentini, segretario generale della Confederazione internazionale dei sindacati (Ituc) e Niccolò Figa Talamanca, direttore dell’ong No peace without justice. I cinque arrestati avrebbero tentato di influenzare le decisioni economiche e politiche del Parlamento europeo a favore di un Paese del Golfo che, secondo la stampa belga, sarebbe il Qatar. 

S&D: sostituire Kaili come vicepresidente del Pe – “Il gruppo S&D richiederà un nuovo punto all’ordine del giorno della prossima conferenza dei presidenti del Parlamento europeo, sulla base dell’art. 21 del regolamento interno. Alla luce dell’indagine, Eva Kaili dovrebbe essere sostituita come vicepresidente del Pe, al fine di proteggere la rispettabilità dell’istituzione e la fiducia dei cittadini”. Lo annuncia in un tweet la presidente dei Socialisti all’Eurocamera Iratxe Garcia Perez.

Qatar, arrestate la moglie e la figlia di Panzeri.

Le due donne si trovano ora in carcere a Bergamo.

Bergamo, 09 DIC – È stato eseguito oggi nella Bergamasca il mandato di arresto europeo nei confronti della moglie e della figlia di Pier Antonio Panzeri, l’ex eurodeputato dei Socialisti e Democratici finito nell’inchiesta di Bruxelles per corruzione e riciclaggio, con vincolo di associazione per delinquere.

Panzeri risulta avere ancora casa a Calusco d’Adda, il paese del bergamasco di cui è originario: proprio lì sarebbero state rintracciate la moglie di Panzeri, Maria Colleoni, 67 anni, e la figlia Silvia, 38.

Le donne si trovano ora in carcere a Bergamo, dove sono state accompagnate in base al mandato che prevede la custodia cautelare in carcere.

 Brussels, 11 DIC – La giustizia belga ha convalidato l’arresto e confermato le accuse per quattro persone fermate nell’ambito dell’inchiesta sulle sospette tangenti dal Qatar all’Eurocamera. Tra di esse, è confermato l’arresto della vice presidente greca del Parlamento europeo Eva Kaili. Quattro italiani erano in stato di fermo da venerdì. Tra loro c’è l’ex eurodeputato del Pd e di Articolo 1 Antonio Panzeri e Francesco Giorgi, compagno della vice presidente del Pe Eva Kaili.

La procura di Bruxelles, confermando l’arresto delle quattro persone, non ha indicato i nomi delle persone accusate. Venerdì, ad essere stati fermati erano stati l’ex eurodeputato Antonio Panzeri, il sindacalista Luca Visentini, il compagno di Eva Kaili Francesco Giorgio e Niccolò Figa-Talamanca della ong No peace Without Justice. Nelle ore successive erano stati arrestati Kaili e suo padre.

“Lo Stato del Qatar respinge categoricamente qualsiasi tentativo di associarlo ad accuse di cattiva condotta”: è la dichiarazione di un esponente del Paese del Golfo inviata per e-mail a Politico.eu che ha provato a contattare Doha sull’inchiesta corruzione al Parlamento europeo che sta portando avanti la procura di Bruxelles.

L’abitazione a Bruxelles dell’eurodeputato socialista Marc Tarabella è stata perquisita sabato sera nell’ambito dell’inchiesta sulle sospette tangenti dal Qatar all’Eurocamera. E’ quanto si legge sui siti dei due quotidiani belgi Le Soir e Knack. Il materiale informatico dell’eurodeputato belga è stato sequestrato dagli investigatori ma Tarabella non è in stato di fermo.

“Il Parlamento europeo e la presidente Metsola stanno collaborando attivamente e pienamente con le autorità di giudiziarie per favorire il corso della giustizia”, ha sottolineato Juri Laas, portavoce della presidente dell’Eurocamera, Roberta Metsola.

“E’ una cosa gravissima, se quello che emerge da prime decisioni procura Bruxelles fosse confermato si tratterebbe di esponenti del Parlamento ed attivisti che avrebbero ricevuto soldi per chiudere un occhio sulle condizioni di lavoro in Qatar. Una vicenda vergognosa e intollerabile. Se si confermera’ che qualcuno ha preso soldi per cercare di influenzare l’opinione del Parlamento europeo penso che sara’ veramente una delle piu’ drammatiche storie di corruzione di questi anni”, ha detto il commissario Ue agli affari economici Paolo Gentiloni ospite a Mezz’ora in più.

Lo rivela il Wall Street Journal, secondo il quale si tratta di un affare da 1,2 miliardi di dollari (questo è il valore stimato delle due società combinate insieme) che partorirà la più grande azienda di benessere sessuale del mondo, capace di generare entrate per 400 milioni di dollari l’anno e un listino di almeno 50 tipi diversi di vibratori. I ricavi di 400 milioni sono una stima delle due aziende, che è pari al doppio del fatturato combinato delle due ditte nel 2020, a dimostrazione che il settore tira.

I due gruppi scommettono sulla crescita del comparto che, secondo loro, continuerà anche grazie al lancio dei vaccini, che consentirà alle persone di lasciare le proprie case e socializzare in gruppo. Lovehoney Group opererà in Nord America, Europa e Asia, offrendo marchi come We-Vibe, Womanizer e Arcwave. Inoltre, le due società puntano su una scala aggiuntiva che consentirà loro di fare acquisizioni più grandi. “I prodotti per il benessere sessuale hanno guadagnato una posizione dominante nel mercato attuale”, afferma Johannes Plettenberg, amministratore delegato di Wow Tech, il quale agirà in quel ruolo anche in Lovehoney.

                         Vendite a 33 miliardi di dollari

Secondo un rapporto di Grand View Research, una società di ricerche di mercato con sede in California, nel 2020, le vendite globali di sex toys sono cresciute del 26% a 33,6 miliardi di dollari. Si prevede che le vendite totali diminuiranno di quasi il 9% quest’anno, ma la crescita riprenderà a metà del 2022 e aumenterà dell’8% annuo fino al 2028, prevede il rapporto.    Il motivo? Innanzitutto alcune modifiche normative nei paesi asiatici che renderanno questa tipologia di prodotti più ampiamente esportabili e disponibili. Fondata nel 2002, Lovehoney è attualmente controllata da Telemos Capital, che continuerà a controllare il Lovehoney Group. La società di private equity con sede nel Regno Unito è finanziariamente sostenuta da uno dei discendenti dell’ormai defunto miliardario svizzero Klaus Jacobs, l’imprenditore che sta dietro Adecco Group, il gigante delle risorse umane e il produttore di cioccolato Barry Callebaut. Il suo chief investment officer, Jacob Polny, è entrato a far parte della società di acquisizione nel 2017 e proviene dal colosso statunitense del private equity Tpg, dove ha co-diretto gli investimenti per i consumatori, la vendita al dettaglio e il tempo libero in Europa.    L’azionista di controllo di Wow Tech, Cdh Investments, è invece una società di private equity con sede in Cina che supervisiona circa 26 miliardi di dollari di asset e manterrà una quota di minoranza nella nuova società.

Lithuania enforces EU sanctions on goods to Russia’s Kaliningrad

Transit ban on sanctioned goods could increase already high levels of tension between Russia and NATO following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

Lithuanian authorities have banned the transit through their territory of goods to the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad that are subject to European Union sanctions, according to the national rail service.

The enclave – home to the Russian Baltic Fleet and a deployment location for Moscow’s nuclear-capable Iskander missiles – is sandwiched on the Baltic coast between Lithuania and Poland, both NATO members, and has no land border with Russia.

Kaliningrad row: Lithuania lifts rail restrictions for Russian exclave

Lithuania has lifted a ban on the rail transport of sanctioned goods in and out of the Russian area of Kaliningrad.

Kaliningrad is on the Baltic Sea and uses a rail link to Russia via Lithuania for passengers and freight.

Russia was enraged when Lithuania banned the transit of steel and other ferrous metals under EU sanctions last month, and threatened to respond.

But now Lithuanian Railways says it will resume transporting goods to the exclave.

The European Union last week said the transit ban only affected road, not rail, transit, and Lithuania should therefore allow Russia to ship concrete, wood and alcohol across EU territory to Kaliningrad.

Lithuanian bishops call for scrapping of same-sex partnership bill

Vilnius, June 18 (Reuters) – Lithuanian bishops have called on politicians to vote down proposed same-sex partnership legislation, quoting words used by Pope Francis to argue that civil unions distort the concept of marriage and family.

Lithuania’s parliament last month voted to accept for further debate a draft bill legalizing same-sex civil partnerships, after voting down a similar bill in May 2021.  

In a pastoral letter to the faithful, the Lithuanian Bishops Conference — a body which unites the country’s bishops — quoted a 2016 treatise by Pope Francis which states “de facto unions or unions of the same sex cannot simply be equated with marriage”.

“The draft law on civil unions essentially proposes what Pope Francis urges us not to do – to equate de facto unions and same-sex unions with marriage. We cannot support this bill, which distorts and devalues the concepts of marriage and the family,” the bishops wrote.

The bishops said civil partnership could be “a Trojan Horse” leading to civil marriage.

The letter did not touch on Pope Francis’ 2020 declaration that gays should be protected by civil union laws.

An April 2021 an opinion poll found 70% of adult Lithuanians oppose same-sex partnerships.

Three quarters of Lithuania’s 2.8 million population identify as Roman Catholics, and several parliamentarians called homosexuality a “sin” during the debate before the vote on taking the bill up for further readings.

In a nod to critics, the same-sex bill in the parliament no longer defines partnerships as an “emotional connection” or allows partners to assume a common surname.

“The law could better defend human dignity, but support was needed and this (wording) was the lowest threshold possible,” said Gabrielius Landsbergis, head of the ruling Homeland Union party.

Lithuanian bishops have thrown their weight behind an alternative bill, also under consideration in the parliament, that would allow a group of people to declare a “close connection” and be given additional rights.

A Washington-insider rule of thumb is that if the president has an approval rating above 60 percent, so popular is he out in the country that he can largely tell Congress what to do, as was the case for Franklin Roosevelt in 1936, Dwight D. One assumes the company hoped to cash in on Hunter’s father’s position, otherwise there seems no logical reason for him to be hired. Worse, Hunter also engaged in murky work in China — America’s emerging strategic competitor — even hitching a ride with his then vice president father to facilitate business dealings.

A grand jury has been convened to investigate all this, plus his highly possible non-payment of tax. However, the trouble does not stop with Hunter Biden. Leaks from the grand jury’s work appeared in the British newspaper The Times and other reputable sources, confirming what Hunter’s former business partner, Tony Bobulinksi, has repeatedly said: Joe Biden was deeply involved in Hunter’s dodgy business dealings. Particularly damning is one email revealed by Bobulinski that says: “10 held by H for the Big Guy,” a reference to the percentage equity distribution in a venture with a now-defunct Chinese energy company. It does not take a mind reader to glean that “H” may well be Hunter, or who “The Big Guy” is, an obvious supposition confirmed by Bobulinski, who has been voluntarily cooperating with the FBI.

But far worse for the president is that during the campaign he made a number of barely-believable statements, at the time (incredibly) not followed up by the suspiciously incurious mainstream American media. When asked what, if anything, he knew of his son’s business practices, candidate Biden said that they had never spoken of them. I remember at the time yelling at my TV: “Never? Not at Christmas? Thanksgiving? Not when the kids get together? You never asked your son how his business was going or what he was doing in all these far-flung places?” This may have been my knee-jerk, logical reaction to such a likely misstatement, but again, incredibly, Biden was not called out on it. That is, until now.

Il governo tedesco piuttosto che allontanare Kentler decise di collaborare con lui e la Germania fu piagata da quarant’anni di abusi sui bambini permessi dallo stesso governo che avrebbe dovuto proteggerli.

Child porn cases set to overwhelm German police.

During the first half of 2021, reports of child pornography in Germany almost reached the country’s caseload from last year – as federal police authorities warn that its forces are being stretched to their “limits.”

The head of Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) told Bild am Sonntag newspaper that there were as many cases with child sexual abuse imagery reported between January to July this year as recorded across all of 2020.

“The number of reports that we receive about such crimes is up, and the number of investigations is increasing,” BKA President Holger Münch told the paper, adding that the “significant increase…will increasingly bring the police to their resource limits.”

Although Münch did not specify the exact figures for 2021, local media revealed that the BKA had registered some 18,761 cases last year. This apparently marked a nearly 53% increase from 2019.

He also noted that the BKA would likely be needed to “provide more intensive support” to police across Germany’s 16 states in order to combat the growing incidence of child sexual abuse images.

Münch’s comments came as reports emerged about a Catholic priest from the northwestern city of Osnabrück being investigated over alleged child sex abuse images crimes. A diocese spokesperson told local media that the priest had been relieved of his duties with immediate effect.

Following a months-long Europol-led probe, German police in May shut down what they described as “one of the world’s biggest child pornography darknet platforms” and arrested three suspects thought to be its administrators. The site, called ‘Boystown’, had been active since June 2019 and apparently had some 400,000 users at the time it was taken offline.

Then, in July, Bavarian police identified more than 1,600 potential child sex abuse suspects from the US, Austria, Switzerland and France who participated in online chat groups on which child pornography and zoophilia material was shared. Many of the suspects were reportedly minors.

BUDAPEST, Aug 6 (Reuters) – Hungary ordered shops on Friday to sell children’s books seen as promoting homosexuality in “closed wrapping”, stepping up restrictions that have set Prime Minister Viktor Orban on a collision course with rights groups and the European Union.

The decree also included books seen as promoting gender change and containing “explicit” depictions of sexuality. It told shops to sell them separately and banned any sale of them at all within 200 metres of a school or a church.

The order is the first of what is expected to be a series of directives spelling out the implications of a law passed in June banning the use of materials seen as promoting homosexuality and gender reassignment at schools.

The European Commission has launched legal action against Orban’s nationalist government over the legislation, saying it is discriminatory and contravenes European values of tolerance and individual freedom.

Orban, in power since 2010 and facing a challenging election next year, has grown increasingly radical on social policy in a self-proclaimed crusade to safeguard what he says are traditional Christian values from Western liberalism.

In July Hungary fined the distributor of a children’s book about same-sex “rainbow families” under a law that bans unfair trade practices. Orban’s government says the new law is meant to protect children and leave it up to parents to educate them about sexuality.

Several rights groups have said the law wrongly conflates paedophilia and pornography with LGBT issues. Ursula von der Leyen, head of the EU’s executive Commission has called it a “disgrace”.

An Ipsos poll last month found that 46% of Hungarians support same-sex marriage. Last month thousands of Hungarians joined the annual Budapest Pride march to protest against the law.

The European Commission’s legal action against Hungary and a separate move against Poland are the latest salvo in a clash of cultures between Brussels and some of the EU’s newest members in eastern Europe over a range of core issues including the rule of law and press freedoms.

Howard Rubin, a former money manager for George Soros, is being accused by six women of beating them during sadomasochistic sex sessions at a specially constructed ‘sex dungeon’ in his Manhattan apartment.

Another woman said she and Rubin had sex against her will claiming that while bound in his chamber he told her: ‘I’m going to rape you like I rape my daughter’ before forcing her to have intercourse. 

Last month, Rubin’s longstanding wife of 36 years, Mary Henry, with whom he shares three children, and is herself another Wall Street banker, filed for divorce.

The financier, who has homes in the Hamptons and on New York’s Upper East Side, was known in Wall Street circles as something of a high roller as he earned millions for the billionaire investor until this scandal threatened to overshadow his reputation.  

The original allegations were brought by Mia Lytell, Amy Moore and Stephanie Caldwell in 2017.

Lytell and Moore are former Playboy Playmates, while Caldwell is a model who worked at a Miami strip club.

All accuse Rubin of assault, battery and human trafficking. 

‘In short, they are each alleging that they were brought to New York and taken advantage of. The allegations come down to the women saying they were physically and sexually abused,’ said John Balestriere, a lawyer acting on behalf of the women. 

‘Nobody is saying a gun was put to their heads to come to New York. Our clients are alleging that they were misled and lied to and were victims of physical and sexual violence.

‘None of these women came to New York knowing that they would be physically and sexually abused. They did not consent to what did end up happening. The key factor is that Mr. Rubin said these individuals consented to the physical and sexual violence perpetrated against them. Our six clients say they did not consent … ‘ 

An initial lawsuit said while Lytell and Moore believed that Rubin intended to play ‘some mild fetish games and perhaps take photos, neither expected to be bound with rope and tape and gagged or to be actually beaten’. 

Lytell claims ‘she was restrained’ and ‘in and out of consciousness’ unaware if Rubin penetrated her or used an object to do so.

A motion for summary judgment, filed by Rubin’s lawyer, Edward McDonald, the women signed non-disclosure agreements with a penalty of at least $500,000 if broken.

McDonald says the women even acknowledged that they could be injured during sex games.

The women say that they had little time to read the agreements and ‘did not have lawyers present’ when signing.

Furthermore, they claim that when they ‘screamed or protested [during a session], Rubin would simply become more violent. 

McDonald said that his client denies the women’s claims adding: ‘Mr Rubin has not been charged with any crimes. It is entirely a civil matter.’ 

He notes that on one occasion Rubin texted Lytell to make sure she was aware of what she was getting into. 

‘Do u [know] what you are in for?’ a text contained in court papers reads.

Rubin also denies any allegations of drugging. ‘He was not supplying drugs to the girls — except possibly painkillers during the encounters [which were painful].’

He joined the Mortgage Department at Bear Stearns, becoming a Senior Managing Director and head of the CMO Trading Desk before retiring in 1999 as one of the most-respected men on Wall Street.

In 1987, Rubin caused historic losses at Merrill Lynch through a series of unauthorized trades which cost the company $250million. The figure was later reported by The New York Times to be as high as $377million. 

At the time, Wall Street insiders told how he bought billions of dollars worth of mortgage bonds without receiving approval from his seniors. 

When the market plummeted, he was unable to sell them off and incurred astronomical losses for the company. 

He was fired and the matter was turned over to Wall Street watchdogs but Rubin was never criminally prosecuted.  

Despite the loss, he was appointed Senior Managing Director at Bear Stearns, where he ran the Collateralized Mortgage Obligations desk from 1987 to 1999. 

In 2008 he came out of retirement to manage a Mortgage-Backed Securities Fund for financier George Soros, run by Soros Fund Management, LLC. He quit the firm in 2015. 

Until last month, Rubin had been married to philanthropist and fellow Harvard Business School graduate Mary Henry since 1985. 

Before attending Harvard Business School, he attended Lafayette College in Pennsylvania. 

The couple raised their three children, two daughters and then a son, in New York on the Upper East Side.

A drive by Texas lawmakers to restrict transgender participation in sports is the latest signal of pushback in Republican-led states as President Joe Biden champions expanded LGBTQ rights.

While the two Texas bills are stuck because of a walkout by the state’s House Democrats, they’re part of a growing trend of more than 250 anti-LGBTQ bills introduced in 33 states this year. Of those, 25 were signed into law, according to the Human Rights Campaign — the most in a year since the group began tracking the figures in 2015.

In Texas, the number of bills introduced to limit transgender rights has more than doubled to almost 50 this year, including 17 proposals offered during a 30-day special session that ended Wednesday, all of them dealing with transgender people competing in sports, according to Equality Texas, an advocacy group.

“This constitutes a national emergency,” said Ricardo Martinez, the group’s chief executive officer. “And we don’t have to wait for these bills to be passed for them to cause harm.”

By contrast, Biden has issued executive orders to advance the LGBTQ rights. He lifted the ban on transgender service in the U.S. military and the State Department has ended requirements for medical certification for passports if a person’s self-selected gender doesn’t match the gender on their identity documents.

The Democratic-led U.S. House in February passed the Equality Act, which would amend federal civil rights laws, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964, to extend protections to cover sexual orientation and gender identity in the workforce, public places and government programs. The measure is stalled in the 50-50 Senate, where many Republicans argue it infringes on religious freedom.

The risk is a patchwork of rules so anyone moving across state lines will “literally have your legal rights change multiple times,” said Alphonso David, president of the Human Rights Campaign. “These issues certainly should be resolved at the federal level.”

That prospect is clouded by Senate rules that require at least 60 votes to advance most legislation. Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley, a Democrat who’s the author of the Senate version of the Equality Act, has been lobbying Republicans to support the legislation, but there’s no sign of imminent action.

Merkey said in an email that he’s “hopeful that we will continue to build on the Equality Act’s momentum, by getting this bill across the finish line in the Senate and onto President Biden’s desk to be signed into law.”

School sports have become the latest battleground on LGBTQ rights. This week’s special session of the Texas legislature called by Governor Greg Abbott brought state Senate approval of two measures — SB 2 and SB 32 — that would require transgender student athletes to compete on sports teams based on their gender assigned at birth.

Texas Senator Charles Perry, who wrote both bills, argued that the differences in body mass and makeup between men and women would make competition unfair.

“It is not OK to destroy the dreams of one for the benefit of another,” he said during a committee hearing on Monday.

Nine states ban transgender students from participating in school sports with their gender identity, according to the Movement Advancement Project.

Several medical associations including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Professional Association for Transgender Health have issued statements in support of gender affirming care for transgender youth and their participation in sports.

A Gallup poll released in May found that 66% of Americans favor allowing transgender Americans to serve in the military. When it came to sports, 62% of respondents to the poll said they believe that transgender athletes should play on sports teams that match their gender assigned at birth. Still, 53% of respondents in the Gallup poll said they think new civil rights laws are needed to reduce discrimination against LGBTQ individuals.

Next week, the Tokyo Games will provide a spotlight, featuring the first transgender athletes who qualified since the International Olympic Committee allowed their participation in 2004.

“The same fringe groups who fought and lost against marriage equality and bathroom access continue to use misinformation and false claims to target LGBTQ people and kids across the country,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, president of GLAAD, the LGBTQ advocacy group.

China’s Wechat deletes university LGBT accounts

Chinese tech giant Tencent’s WeChat social media platform has deleted dozens of LGBT accounts run by university students, saying some had broken rules on information on the internet, sparking fear of a crackdown on gay content online.

Members of several LGBT groups told Reuters that access to their accounts was blocked late on Tuesday and they later discovered that all of their content had been deleted.

“Many of us suffered at the same time,” said the account manager of one group who declined to be identified due to the sensitivity of the issue.

“They censored us without any warning. All of us have been wiped out.”

Attempts by Reuters to access some accounts were met with a notice from WeChat saying the groups “had violated regulations on the management of accounts offering public information service on the Chinese internet”.

Other accounts did not show up in search results.

WeChat did not immediately respond to emailed questions.

While homosexuality, which was classified as a mental disorder until 2001, is legal in China, same sex marriage is not recognised. Social stigma and pressure still deter people from coming out.

The LGBT community has repeatedly found itself falling foul of censors and the Cyberspace Administration of China recently pledged to clean up the internet to protect minors and crack down on social media groups deemed a “bad influence”.

The Weibo social media platform, owned by Weibo Corp, has at times removed lesbian content and the online community board platform Zhihu has censored topics on gender and identity.

Last year, China’s only pride festival was cancelled indefinitely after organisers cited concerns over staff safety.

“Authorities have been tightening the space available for LGBT advocacy and civil society generally. This is another turning of the screw,” said Darius Longarino, a senior fellow at Yale Law School’s Paul Tsai’s China Center, who focuses on LGBT rights and gender equality.
