Greece Warns Europeans Face a $395 Billion Hike in Energy Bills Next Year
Greece warns Europeans of $395 billion increase in energy bills 2022
Greek Energy Minister Costas Skirikas has warned that the energy bill for Europeans will rise by 395 billion dollars over the next year, with significant threats from demand for fuel and energy that will keep prices high.
Skrekas said a new mechanism should be created to help protect the most vulnerable citizens and medium-sized businesses from price hikes at the EU level.
This came as officials from Hungary and Spain expressed their concerns about the recent fluctuations in carbon emissions markets at a meeting of environment ministers in Brussels.
Greece had estimated earlier this year that Europeans would face an increase of 100 billion euros this winter alone, according to “Bloomberg” and seen by “Al Arabiya.net”.
Europe’s energy crisis is straining national budgets and has become one of the EU’s biggest political challenges, driving up inflation dramatically as governments grapple with the spread of the Omicron virus.
Member states have made a number of proposals, ranging from redesigning how the electricity market works to capping the bloc’s carbon trading market.
For its part, the European Commission stressed the need to switch to cheaper renewable energy sources. In October, it introduced a toolkit that governments can use to help support citizens struggling with rising energy costs.
Global supply pressure for natural gas, along with declining inventories, military tension on the Russia-Ukraine border and renewable energy bottlenecks, have contributed to higher electricity, gas and coal prices.
Gas futures in Europe rose about 600% during 2021, while energy futures in Germany for next year and the French equivalent both rose to record levels on Monday.
