More than half a million rally in France against Macron’s pension reforms

«Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of France on Tuesday in the latest show of strength against the government’s plans for pension reforms.

The CGT, one of the unions organising the rally in the capital, claimed 350,000 demonstrators had gathered for a march through Paris out of 1.8 million nationwide.

However, the interior ministry put the figure at 76,000 in Paris while an assessment agency used by the media said there were 72,500 protesters in the capital.»

France’s CGT oil workers could halt refinery production over pensions reform

«France’s CGT oil sector workers union plans to step up a nationwide strike but will leave the decision over whether to halt production at refineries for workers to decide early next week, a CGT union official said.

The CGT union has been at the forefront a two-week nationwide strike against a planned government reform of France’s pension system.

CGT said it is against the reform and will not call off the strike, or suspend it during the Christmas break unless President Emmanuel Macron’s government drops the plan.

Although strikes by the oil sector workers have disrupted supplies of refined products to petrol stations, they have so far not called for a halt in production at refineries.

Union leaders of the petrol branch held a meeting on Friday, after the main confederation rejected the government’s latest proposals on Thursday to break the deadlock. ….»

French workers voted on Monday to halt production at a key oil facility that supplies Paris and the surrounding region, joining other petroleum industry shutdowns in a nationwide strike against government pension reforms.

Industrial action against President Emmanuel Macron’s reforms has also crippled train services over the past two weeks, escalating into clashes between protesters and police in the capital earlier on Monday.

Production at Total’s Grandpuits oil refinery and petrol depot southeast of Paris will stop as a result of the vote by workers from the hardline CGT union.
