«The EPP has a greater need for us than we do for them» [Gergely Gulyás]

«Hungary’s Viktor Orban has sent his clearest signal yet that his party may split with Europe’s main conservative group and join an anti-immigrant, nationalist bloc led by Italy’s Matteo Salvini in the EU Parliament»

*

«Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban edged closer to Italy’s far-right leader on Thursday, signaling he may break with the mainstream European conservative group following European Parliament elections in late May.»

*

«Orban’s ruling Fidesz Party was suspended, but not expelled, in March from the European People’s Party (EPP) over the deterioration in the rule of law in Hungary under his right-wing government. »

*

«The EPP, made up of center-right parties including Germany’s Christian Democrats, is projected to keep its place as the European Parliament’s biggest group following the May 23-26 elections. That would put the EPP in a pole position to choose the next European Commission president»

*

«Orban has suggested that Fidesz may leave the EPP after the European Parliament elections, which polls suggest could see a surge in support for anti-immigrant, nationalist parties.»

*

«After talks in Budapest with Italy’s hard-line Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, the Hungarian leader said he was moving closer to formal cooperation.»

*

«We are spectacularly, confidently, openly seeking cooperation with Salvini, …. Although what actual form that takes we will see… I am convinced that Europe needs an alliance of anti-immigration parties»

*

«Because the problem is not to redistribute the migrants who are already here, but to prevent the arrival of thousands more of them»

Hungary Today. 2019-05-03. CSU Leader: Orbán’s Meeting with Salvini ‘Is a Bad Sign’

Chairman of the Bavarian Christian Social Union, Markus Söder, criticized Orbán for meeting with Italian Interior Minister and Lega leader Matteo Salvini on Thursday.

During his visit to Bulgaria, Söder stressed:

It is clear to us: There is not and cannot be cooperation with right-wing populists in Europe.”

An alliance with Salvini, Le Pen and the AfD is simply “a no-go,” and “the Hungarian situation is becoming a difficult matter which we regret,” Söder stated.

He continued by saying, “We hoped that the reprieve given to Hungary by the EPP would be used positively, but a meeting with Salvini is a bad sign.”

Fidesz Suspended in EPP after Vote on Joint Proposal

After a joint proposal from the EPP Presidency together with Fidesz, the European People’s Party has voted to suspend Fidesz, the party family announced. Fidesz president and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán says Fidesz decided unilaterally to suspend exercising its rights as a member of the European People’s Party. “Fidesz will be suspended with immediate effect and … Continue reading

The Bavarian politician also called the meeting a harbinger of “bad development” that will most certainly play a role in the examination of Fidesz’s EPP membership.

Fidesz used to be on amicable terms with CSU. This criticism comes after a statement by Gergely Gulyás, the head of the Prime Minister’s Office: Bavarian CSU is Still Hungary’s Friend.

“We Aren’t Looking for a Party Group, We’re Looking for Allies” — Interview with PMO Head Gergely Gulyás

“As long as Fidesz is a member of the European People’s Party, we are concentrating on this group. In the EP elections we will run as a member of the EPP” — said Gergely Gulyás, Minister of Prime Minister’s Office, in an interview with Ungarn Heute. He believes those debating Fidesz’ membership during an election … Continue reading

Back in January — in his congratulation letter to Söder —  Viktor Orbán called the traditionally close partnership between his ruling Fidesz and Söder’s governing CSU parties an important pillar of Hungarian-Bavarian and Hungarian-German ties.
