Ungheria. Mr Orban lo scaltro sta beffando Germania e Frau Merkel.

Giuseppe Sandro Mela.

2018-06-21.

Sunrise behind the Hungarian Parliament building in Budapest.

Tertulliano aveva ragione da vendere:

«Tanbtum dabis, tantum dabo».

Spazzola compresa.

*

Ricapitoliamo con ordine.

«When some 400,000 people travelled through Hungary in the middle of the migrant crisis of 2015 on their way to Western Europe, Mr Orban ordered fences put up to halt the influx.»

*

«The Commission imposed a mandatory asylum quota for every EU state in response to the crisis, but Mr Orban refused to accept it.»

*

«In 2015, 177,000 people sought asylum in Hungary but only a few hundred were accepted. Last year, the number of asylum claims fell to around 3,200»

*

«In a related development, MPs passed an amendment to the constitution that declares that “alien populations cannot be settled in Hungary”»

*

«The Hungarian parliament has passed new legislation that criminalises lawyers and activists who help asylum seekers»

*

«Viktor Orban’s government has dubbed the legislation the “Stop Soros law”, after the billionaire philanthropist it accuses of supporting Muslim migrants»

*

«Hungary says immigration threatens its national security, but its hardline stance and new law have faced widespread international criticism»

*

«The new legislation amends eight existing laws and introduces one new crime of “facilitating illegal immigration”»

*

«Under the new law, anyone could be jailed for working for or with non-governmental organisations that are involved in helping or campaigning for asylum seekers»

*

«Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban indicated in his latest speech that his Fidesz party doesn’t want to leave the European People’s Party (EPP). Despite speculations, press information suggests that the party family is not excluding Hungary’s ruling party either»

*

«Although leaders of the European People’s Party “had made mistakes to our detriment” Fidesz will “undertake the more difficult task of renewing the EPP and help it find its way back to its Christian Democratic roots»

*

«In relation to the 2019 elections to the European Parliament, it would be easy to, say, establish a new formation from like-minded Central European parties – or, indeed, a pan-European anti-immigration formation. There is no doubt that we would have great success in the 2019 European elections. But I suggest that we resist this temptation, and stand by Helmut Kohl’s ideals and party family»

*

«He said that the EPP had been “slowly but continuously” losing its strength during the past 15 years because it had “created an anti-populist people’s front” as against the emerging new parties. He added, however, that this tendency should be replaced by a “Christian Democratic renaissance”»

* * * * * * *

Diavolo sì, ma liberal no.

Vertice Austria – Baviera? E Frau Merkel dove mai sarà? Nel cestino?

→  Bbc. 2018-06-20. Hungary passes ‘Stop Soros’ law banning help for migrants

The Hungarian parliament has passed new legislation that criminalises lawyers and activists who help asylum seekers.

Anyone “facilitating illegal immigration” will face a year in jail.

Viktor Orban’s government has dubbed the legislation the “Stop Soros law”, after the billionaire philanthropist it accuses of supporting Muslim migrants.

The vote in Budapest came hours after a number of European Union leaders agreed to hold crisis talks on how to overhaul asylum rules.

Hungary says immigration threatens its national security, but its hardline stance and new law have faced widespread international criticism.

The UN refugee agency urged Hungarian officials to scrap the proposed law and legal experts from the Council of Europe human rights organisation appealed for the vote to be postponed until they had submitted a review of the measures on Friday.

A report by the Council’s Venice Commission leaked to the BBC said the Hungarian legislation “criminalises organisational activities which are not directly related to the materialisation of the illegal migration”.

Why is the law controversial?

The new legislation amends eight existing laws and introduces one new crime of “facilitating illegal immigration”.

Under the new law, anyone could be jailed for working for or with non-governmental organisations that are involved in helping or campaigning for asylum seekers. Human rights groups insist all they are trying to do is help people who have been allowed in Hungary legally apply for asylum.

The measures also tighten restrictions on asylum, so that anyone attempting to enter Hungary from a third country where they are not directly threatened with persecution cannot claim asylum.

In a related development, MPs passed an amendment to the constitution that declares that “alien populations cannot be settled in Hungary”, in effect outlawing the European Commission’s attempts to relocate asylum seekers from Italy and Greece to other EU states.

When some 400,000 people travelled through Hungary in the middle of the migrant crisis of 2015 on their way to Western Europe, Mr Orban ordered fences put up to halt the influx. The Commission imposed a mandatory asylum quota for every EU state in response to the crisis, but Mr Orban refused to accept it.

In 2015, 177,000 people sought asylum in Hungary but only a few hundred were accepted. Last year, the number of asylum claims fell to around 3,200.

→  Hungarian Journal. 2018-06-20. Merkel invited Orban to Berlin

Hungarian daily Nepszava has learnt from Fidesz and governmental sources that German Chancellor Angela Merkel has invited Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to Berlin.

According to the newspaper the exact date of the visit is still unclear, due to the crisis in the German coalition. Nepszava noted that this invitation could mean a significant shift in German-Hungarian relations. According to the newspaper, a Visegrad Four (Hungary, Slovakia, Poland and the Czech Republic) – Germany summit planned for last May was cancelled, because the participants couldn’t agree on the agenda.

The idea of another V4-Germany came up right after the Hungarian parliamentary elections in April, but it hasn’t taken place after all, partially because Slovakia – who takes over the Visegrad presidency from July – lobbied for a similar meeting to be held in Bratislava in autumn.

→  Hungarian Journal. 2018-06-20. Orban stays in the EPP

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban indicated in his latest speech that his Fidesz party doesn’t want to leave the European People’s Party (EPP). Despite speculations, press information suggests that the party family is not excluding Hungary’s ruling party either.

Although leaders of the European People’s Party “had made mistakes to our detriment” Fidesz will “undertake the more difficult task of renewing the EPP and help it find its way back to its Christian Democratic roots,” Viktor Orban said at a conference marking the first anniversary of the death of German Chancellor Helmut Kohl on Saturday.

“In relation to the 2019 elections to the European Parliament, it would be easy to, say, establish a new formation from like-minded Central European parties – or, indeed, a pan-European anti-immigration formation. There is no doubt that we would have great success in the 2019 European elections. But I suggest that we resist this temptation, and stand by Helmut Kohl’s ideals and party family,”

he said.

He said that the EPP had been “slowly but continuously” losing its strength during the past 15 years because it had “created an anti-populist people’s front” as against the emerging new parties. He added, however, that this tendency should be replaced by a “Christian Democratic renaissance”.

On the same day, left-wing daily Nepszava reported that according to several Fidesz MEPs, the conservative wing of the EPP is expected to strengthen after the European elections in 2019, while the liberal wing will probably lose influence. All the MEPs expect Fidesz’s influence to grow in the party family.

Nevertheless, they examined the possibility of being excluded from the EPP, in case anti-Fidesz campaigns of the more liberal member parties and various NGOs succeed. According to the group’s rules, the whole Fidesz delegation can’t be excluded, the EPP MEPs would have to vote about the exclusion of the each Fidesz MEP separately. They don’t expect this to happen, especially because some Fidesz MEPs are holding important positions – Kinga Gal is the vice-chair of the EPP, Jozsef Szajer is the vice-chair of the group and Livia Jaroka is one of the EP’s vice-presidents -, and they vote along the group majority in 90% of the votes.

Politico’s European edition reported last week that eurosceptic parties want to form a new alliance which would include Orban, but based on his latest speech and the insider information, it’s unlikely that he would leave the EPP. However, if Fidesz is excluded, the option to form a new, eurosceptic bloc is still on the table.
