Rowling Apologizes for Claiming Trump Ignored Disabled Boy [Bloomberg]

«London (AP) — J.K. Rowling has apologized for tweets alleging that U.S. President Donald Trump refused to shake the hand of a disabled boy.

The “Harry Potter” author called Trump “horrible” after seeing footage of the president appearing to ignore the child’s outstretched hand during a White House event last week.

But the boy’s mother, Marjorie Kelly Weer, posted on Facebook: “Trump didn’t snub my son & Monty wasn’t even trying to shake his hand.”

Rowling, who has often criticized Trump, said she “apologized unreservedly.” She tweeted Monday that “I very clearly projected my own sensitivities around the issue of disabled people being overlooked or ignored onto the images I saw.”»

Già.

Ma le cose non sono mica andate così.

JK Rowling apologises for claiming Donald Trump refused to shake disabled boy’s hand

«JK Rowling has apologised for her tweets claiming that Donald Trump refused to shake the hand of a disabled boy.

She did not apologise to Mr Trump, but instead said sorry to the mother of the child.

She wrote: “Re: my tweets about the small boy in a wheelchair whose proffered hand the president appeared to ignore in press footage.

“Multiple sources have informed me that that was not a full or accurate representation of their interaction.

“I very clearly projected my own sensitivities around the issue of disabled people being overlooked or ignored onto the images I saw and if that caused any distress to that boy or his family, I apologise unreservedly.”

The author has been criticised by the mother of a disabled child for claiming Donald Trump refused to shake the boy’s hand.

In a series of tweets, the author lambasted the President for what she said was “looking deliberately over a disabled child’s head, ignoring his outstretched hand”.

However, footage shows that he did shake the child’s hand, and the clip JK Rowling tweeted simply showed the boy waving his secret service patch.

A woman claiming to be the boy’s mother wrote on Facebook: “Ummmm…if someone can please get a message to JK Rowling: Trump didn’t snub my son & Monty wasn’t even trying to shake his hand.

“(1. He’s 3 and hand shaking is not his thing, 2. he was showing off his newly acquired secret service patch). Thanks”.

JK Rowling had written: “Trump imitated a disabled reporter. Now he pretends not to see a child in a wheelchair, as though frightened he might catch his condition.

“This monster of narcissism values only himself and his pale reflections. The disabled, minorities, transgender people, the poor, women (unless related to him by ties of blood, and therefore his creations) are treated with contempt, because they do not resemble Trump.

“My mother used a wheelchair. I witnessed people uncomfortable around her disability, but if they had a shred of decency they got over it.

“So, yes, that clip of Trump looking deliberately over a disabled child’s head, ignoring his outstretched hand, has touched me on the raw.

“That man occupies the most powerful office in the free world and his daily outrages against civilised norms are having a corrosive effect.

“How stunning, and how horrible, that Trump cannot bring himself to shake the hand of a small boy who only wanted to touch the President.”

Many have criticised JK Rowling for her statement.

Chelsea Clinton had retweeted JK Rowling’s claims about Donald Trump. However, when she was shown the full video, she admitted her error.

Ms Clinton wrote: “Hello Piers-I hadn’t seen the full video until now. I removed the retweet. And, the President should have shaken the boy’s hand at the end.”»
